Buying foods in large quantities will save you money and time but there are a few basic things that you need to know in order to keep these foods fresh. Some of the foods that are suitable for buying in large quantities are:
Anything that is dry can be stored for six months to a year. The most important thing is to buy the correct container to store these items. There are many kinds and sizes of containers on the market such as plastic large jars that are see-through. The plastic jars are very inexpensive and can be bought at any dollar store or department store. It is very advisable to buy the gallon size because this size will hold almost a five-pound bag of flour, sugar, etc.
Have you ever seen these gallon jars of dill pickles and pickled eggs in these little mom and pop stores that sit on the counter at the cash register? These glass jars are ideal for storing dry foods. Ask the cashier if you can buy the empty ones. They will usually say yes and sell them to you for under a dollar apiece. They will sell them to you with the vinegar from the pickles still in the jars so you have to take them home and wash them. Even so, this is still a great bargain.
Buy some smaller plastic containers to put small amounts of food in such as crackers and chips, etc.
Buying food in large quantities also saves you time because when you make a trip to the grocery store you won’t have to be buying so much food and there won’t be so many heavy bags of food to carry in and put away.
Now, the next thing you do is find a dry cool place to store all of your containers. This is very important because it will keep your food fresh longer. Be sure that all the lids are screwed on tightly before you put them away and after each use.
You’ll feel a sense of accomplishment when you look in your pantry and see all the stored food on the shelves and you’ll always have flour, sugar, and anything else you need when you cook a meal.
