The art of knitting is an age-old skill which is learned by both women and men nowadays. Knitting is used to make hats, blankets, sweaters, hats, and even mittens and slippers. KNitting is simply making fabric by putting together loops of yarn. There are two basic types of knitting stitches and they are called the knit stitch and the purl stitch.
In order to start knitting, you will need to purchase two knitting needles and enough yarn to make the project of your choice. Knitting needles come in different sizes, so you will need to purchase the size you need for your project at hand. Yarn comes in different colors, gauges, and materials, and, here too, you will need to decide on what kind of yarn that you will need.
Note: These knitting instructions are for a right-handed person. If you are a left-handed person, then you will need to reverse which needle you use. That is, if the instructions say “left hand”, then you should use your right hand, and vice versa. A good way for a left-hander to learn how to knit is to watch your hands in front of a mirror.
The first step in knitting is called casting on. It is how you build your first row of stitches on the knitting needle. To start with, make a slip knot over the needle in your left hand. Place the tip of the needle in your right hand, going from the front to the back, into the slip knot, and under the left needle.
Use your finger to bring the yarn under and over the tip of the right needle. Then, draw the yarn through the stitch by using the tip of the right needle. Slide the tip of the left needle into the backside of the new stitch that you have just made, then remove the right needle. Place the tip of the right needle, going from front to back again into the new stitch and then under the left needle. Repeat this until you have enough stitches on your left needle to begin your project.
The idea of actual knitting is to move your project from one needle to the other needle. And, as it changes hands, you must too by turning your project around. After your project is finished, you then cast off. Casting off involves removing the stitches from the needles by starting with the left hand and knitting the first two stitches in a row.
Put the left needle through the first right stitch. Place the stitch over the second and the right needle. Drop the stitch from the left to the middle. One stitch is done. Knit another stitch and repeat until the right needle has the last stitch. Cut the yarn and pull it to make the stitches tight. Then, knot it and you are done.
A good tip to keep in mind when knitting is to keep some extra yarn handy from every project you do. This is especially important for clothing as it tends to get snagged more. With the extra yarn, you can easily mend a snagged place in the fabric and it will look like new again.A good tip
