So often, parents are simply exhausted at the end of a long day of work, meetings, deadlines, appointments, and errands. It is difficult to find both the energy and the time to devote to family. Sure, you and your family see each other at the end of the day, but you may basically be passing each other in the hall or collapsing onto the couch before bedtime.
In today’s hectic world, how do you find quality time with your family? Actually, quality time can be defined in several different ways. Of course, you can plan to spend time with your family doing a specific activity, but you don’t have to schedule something to experience quality time.
If your family is like many others, you spend a lot of time in your car. You take your children to school, practices, lessons, friend’s houses, and many other extracurricular activities. You can also turn off the radio, or at least lower the volume, and talk to your child. Ask him or her about his day.
While talking to your pre-school or elementary aged child might be easy, talking to your adolescent may be more like pulling teeth. You will need to get specific with your questions. Ask your child what he is doing in specific classes. Ask him about his different friends. You could even discuss certain thought provoking questions with him. The point is to let him know you are interested in his thoughts, opinions, and his life.
Although it may be difficult to schedule, try setting aside a particular night and designate it family night. It really doesn’t matter what you do on this night as long as you do it together. Some families enjoy renting movies and making popcorn. Others enjoy playing games. If there are several members in your family, let each member be responsible for planning a particular family night.
Some families enjoy cooking together. If you and your family enjoy spending time in the kitchen, you could designate certain nights of the week as a time to try new recipes. Be sure and give everyone in the family a job today. Even your youngest child may be able to stir batter and/or set the table.
Exercise is a great way to spend time with your family, and you are also reinforcing the importance of fitness to your children. There are numerous ways for you to exercise together. If family members have different preferences as to their favorite form of exercise, try to incorporate as many different activities as you can. Not only will this help you become fit, but it will also protect your family from the boredom of repetitive exercise.
While you are exercising, have fun. Talk, laugh, and find humorous ways to spend time becoming more fit and healthy. If you find methods to make exercise more enjoyable, your family will look forward to that time together. You and your family could also invest in a family membership at a local health club. You can sign up for exercise classes, such as aerobics, swimming, and weight lifting.
Your family might also enjoy participating in benefit exercise programs, such as bike-a-thons or marathons. You could also sign up for a co-ed sports league. Don’t worry if you aren’t that athletic. Most of these leagues are made up of people just like you who are searching for fun ways to spend quality time together.
Volunteering in your community can also be a family affair. If you aren’t certain what your area’s needs are, you can check your local newspaper or contact the chamber of commerce. You may want to try several different charitable organizations until you find a charity that everyone in your family enjoys contributing to.
Everyone loves vacations, and even if you and your family can’t find the time or the money to spend a week-long holiday somewhere, you can take mini-vacations right in your own town and neighboring communities. We often overlook tourist attractions that are close to home simply because we assume we’ll visit them someday. Have each member of your family write down various attractions and exhibits he or she would like to see. At least once a month, pull out one of those sights and make plans to spend the day there.
Finally, look for ways that you can connect with your family every day. If you only have time for a meal together, plan to eat at the table with everyone present. Try to be supportive and attend each other’s extracurricular activities as a family. You can find quality time for your family in today’s busy world. You just have to look for it!Finally
