How to make your own homemade shaving soap

There are many ways to save money on the products we use every day. One way is to make your own shaving cream or shaving soap right at home. Below are three different recipes for you to try: a basic shaving cream, old fashioned shaving soap in a decorative mug, and a fancier, scented shaving soap.

A basic shaving cream that is easy to make at home requires the following ingredients:

8 ounces glycostearin (diglycol stearate)

8 ounces heavy mineral oil

40 ounces water

double boiler

In the double boiler, combine the heavy mineral oil and glycostearin and heat to 150 degrees. In the other, separate pot, heat the water to 150 degrees, and then slowly stir in the glycosuria/mineral oil mixture. Once mixed, remove from heat and let cool. When the mixture is cool, you can add perfume if desired. Any extra cream that you have left over can be stored in jars or decorative tins.

For a more traditional, old fashioned shaving soap you’ll need:

½ teaspoon sunflower oil

ÂĽ cup unscented glycerin soap

double boiler

decorative cup or mug

In a double boiler, cut the glycerin soap into chunks and melt. Quickly stir in the sunflower oil and move from the double boiler into a decorative cup or mug. The mixture will set very quickly!!

To use, wet a shaving brush with warm water and rub against soap until a nice lather is created.

A quick gift idea! Place the mug in the center of 2 or 3 different colored sheets of tissue paper. Pull paper up over mug/cup and tie together with a rubber band or ribbon. Buy a nice shaving brush and/or razor and slip it into the side of the rubber band or tie it on with a ribbon!

Here’s another homemade soap to try. Though it’s a little more complicated, the extra ingredients soften and tone skin and help with any nicks, cuts, or minor irritations for sensitive skin.

Materials you will need:

Metal spoon

1-cup glass measuring cup

1/2 tablespoon witch hazel

3 Vitamin E capsules

1/2 tablespoon glycerin

2 standard round bar soap molds

Peppermint fragrance oil (10 drops)

Cinnamon fragrance oil (10 drops)

Orange coloring liquid (2-3 drops)

5 ounces coconut soap base

First slice the soap into small chunks or strips for fast melting. Then put the bits of soap into the measuring cup and place in microwave for about 45 seconds on high heat. Melting time will vary depending on the microwave you use and amount of soap. Remove and stir, then continue melting at 10-15 second intervals until completely melted. Cut the Vitamin E capsules open and squeeze out the liquid into a separate small bowl. While the soap is melting, mix the glycerin, witch hazel, fragrance oils, colorant and Vitamin E together. Mix very well until blended. Pour your soap into the round molds.

Let the soap cool and harden, then wrap in plastic wrap and place in the freezer for a few minutes. This will help the soap come out of the molds easier.

This is a great father’s day or birthday gift. It is also something that the whole family can make together. However, if children are helping with this project, be sure there is adult supervision at all times!
