Wooden spoon puppets are fun and easy to make for kids of all ages and skill levels. They can put on entertaining puppet shows for friends and family with the characters they create. All it takes is a little effort and lots of imagination.
This simple craft project will require long-handled wooden spoons, plastic craft eyes, craft glue, acrylic craft paint of various colors, paintbrushes, craft foam of various colors, scissors, a pencil, a fine-tip black marker, and an assortment of craft sticks and flat wooden shapes. Other decorative trim such as ribbons, beads, faux gemstones, and rickrack may be used. Craft hair and glitter are also optional.
An adorable elephant puppet can be made using gray craft paint, gray craft foam, and craft sticks. Begin by painting a wooden spoon medium gray, and set it aside to dry. Use the same shade of gray to paint a short craft stick and a small wooden oval. These will be used for the elephant’s trunk. While the paint is drying, draw and cut out two appropriately sized ears from a sheet of craft foam. After the paint is completely dry, glue the ears to the back of the wooden spoon. Glue the short craft stick to the center of the spoon, and glue the wooden oval at an angle on the end of the craft stick to complete the trunk. Glue the eyes to the back of the spoon. Allow the glue plenty of time to dry.
Complete the wooden spoon elephant puppet by painting on rosy red checks and a big smile. You can also add more detail to the ears by drawing the contours with a fine-tip black marker.
Make a funny monkey puppet using brown paint and tan craft foam. Begin by painting a wooden spoon medium brown. Set it aside to dry. While it is drying, cut out a tan oval-shaped piece of craft foam for the jowls. Also, cut out two small tan ears. Add details to the face and ears with a fine-tip black marker. After the paint has thoroughly dried, glue the ears to the back of the wooden spoon, and glue the jowls to the appropriate area. Glue on the plastic craft eyes, and set it aside to dry before handling.
A cute cat puppet can be made using white and black craft paint, and pink and white craft foam. Begin by painting the wooden spoon using white acrylic craft paint. While the paint is drying, draw and cut out two pointy white ears and a triangular pink nose from sheets of craft foam. Draw details on the ears, and when the paint has dried completely, glue them to the back of the wooden spoon. Glue the nose and two plastic craft eyes to the face. Draw black whiskers and a mouth on the spoon using a fine-tip black marker. Allow the glue to dry completely before handling the puppet.
You can also make a human puppet using a wooden spoon. Begin by painting a wooden spoon using skin colored acrylic craft paint of your choice. While the paint is drying, create hair for the puppet either with synthetic craft hair, or you can cut out the shape of a wig from a sheet of craft foam. After the paint has dried completely, glue on the wig and a set of plastic craft eyes. Paint on the rest of the facial features using acrylic craft paint. Allow the paint to dry, and further embellish the puppet by gluing on faux gemstones, glitter, or any other decorative trim you desire.
