This craft is great to make right around Thanksgiving. Kids can give these pine cone turkeys to friends and family. They can also be used as place markers at the Thanksgiving table, or as centerpiece decorations. If you’re interested in making pine cone turkeys make sure you have the following
-Plenty of pine cones
-Brown, orange or yellow glitter paint
Step One: Go on an autumn walk with your children and pick up plenty of dried, dark brown pinecones on the way. When you get home, use a damp cloth to wipe dirt from the pine cones. Let them dry before going on to the next step.
Step Two: Using the paint and paintbrushes, paint the edges of the pine cones to make them colorful and bright. Be careful, though, as you don’t want to use too much paint. Too much paint will clog up the pine cone, which will make it difficult to do the next step! Make sure that any paint you use is non-toxic. You also may want to have your kids wear paint smocks in order to protect their clothing, but many companies make washable paints.
Step Three: Start attaching feathers to the pine cone by sticking them down in between the parts of the pine cone. These feathers are available in a variety of colors at craft stores and sometimes grocery stores. Red, yellow, orange, and brown feathers are recommended. You can use the glue to secure the feathers in their place. Try to make the turkey’s feathers look as full as possible. Leave the front (the pointier part) of the pine cone free of feathers.
Step Four: Cut a beak and a wattle out of construction paper. Using Elmer’s glue, attach these to the front of the turkey to make a face. Attach two craft eyes above the beak.
Congratulations, you have now finished a pine cone turkey!
-If you would like to give your turkey feet, these can also be cut out of construction paper and glued to the bottom of the turkey. You can also cut handprints out of construction paper to make very large, funny looking turkey feet.
-If you cannot find feathers to use for this craft, you can make turkey feathers from handprints. Trace hands on a piece of construction paper and cut them out. Glue the hands to the back of the turkey so that the fingers stick out. You can decorate these feathers with glitter paint, as well.
-Be creative! Can you think of any other animals you could make out of pinecones? Try chipmunks, squirrels, skunks, and birds. Remember to focus on the defining characteristics of each animal so that you can exaggerate that characteristic on your pine cone animal!
These pine cone turkeys (or animals) can also be hung around the house as decorations. Just tie a string around the center of the pine cone in order to hang it. You can color the string to make it match the rest of the turkey. These pine cone turkeys
