How to make embossed velvet bags

You can make beautifully embossed velvet bags that look like expensive designer bags commonly found in high-end department stores and specialty shops. These unique bags are surprisingly easy to make, and they can serve a variety of purposes.

To make a beautiful embossed velvet bag you will need an ½ yard of velvet, matching thread, a rubber stamp, a large bowl, water, a sponge, an iron, a grommet tool, grommets, a drawstring, parchment paper, 2 large decorative beads, scissors, straight pins, and a sewing machine. Optional supplies are fabric paint and brushes.

Begin by cutting a piece of velvet into equal pieces. A rectangular shaped bag is very nice, so consider cutting the fabric accordingly. In the meantime, set your iron on the wool setting, and allow it to preheat.

Choose a rubber stamp for the design you wish to put on your bag. You can choose more than one design if you desire. A large flower or other design with few details turns out very nice. Sometimes the more detail a rubberstamp has, the more difficult it is to make out the finished design when used for this type of project. Before embossing a good piece of velvet, practice this technique on scrap pieces of velvet. Practice makes perfect! That way you can see in advance how the design you chose will look on the bag.

After choosing the design for your bag, you will need a bowl of water, parchment paper, and a clean sponge. Lay the rubber stamp on your work surface, and place a piece of velvet over the rubber stamp. Dampen the sponge, and wet the area over the rubber stamp. Make sure there are no wrinkles or creases in the fabric and place a piece of parchment paper over the fabric. Iron over the rubber stamp for several seconds. Carefully peel back the parchment paper, and turn the fabric over to reveal an embossed design. Continue embossing the velvet in this manner until both pieces of fabric are covered with an adequate number of designs. It’s not necessary to cover every square inch of the fabric. Keep in mind that less is often more. Too many designs might make the pattern too busy looking and detract from the finished bag.

Pin the material together with the embossed designs facing inward, and be sure to leave the top open. To form a cuff for the drawstring, turn the material down at the top of the bag. Pin the material to hold it in place. Thread your sewing machine with thread that matches the color of the velvet, and sew the bag together at the sides and the bottom. Remove the pins from the sides and bottom, and complete the sewing process by stitching the cuff on the top of the bag. Remove the remaining pins.

Turn the bag inside out, and use a grommet tool to make holes in the fabric for the drawstring. Make the holes approximately 2 inches apart. After making the holes, use the grommet tool to attach the grommets. Finish the bag by threading a drawstring through the holes. Tie large beads to the ends of the drawstring if desired.

Optionally you can paint the embossed designs using fabric paint. Just fill in the embossed areas with colors of your choice to make an already fancy bag even fancier. Add as many details as you wish.

Use the finished bag for yourself, or give it as a gift with something exquisite inside. These bags can be used to present gifts of wine, lotion, perfume, or any other gift that requires a luxurious gift bag. The recipient will be very impressed with your gift and the expensive-looking velvet embossed bag that surrounds it.
