You can make cinnamon valentine hearts that are aromatic and very decorative.
The mouth-watering scent of cinnamon will fill the room all year long. These unique valentine hearts are great to complete as a group project, and they are easy for kids to make as well as adults.
There are two different recipes you can use to make the aromatic cinnamon dough. The first recipe requires 1 Â cups of cinnamon, 1/3 cup of nontoxic white craft glue, extra cinnamon to prevent sticking, and 1 cup of thick applesauce. Alternately you can make a batch of cinnamon dough using 3/4 cup of thick applesauce, 1 cup of cinnamon, extra cinnamon to prevent sticking, 2 tablespoons of nontoxic white craft glue, 1 tablespoon of ground cloves, and 1 tablespoon of ground nutmeg.
The second cinnamon dough recipe is somewhat more aromatic than the first due to the additional spices. You can find cinnamon sold in bulk at health food stores and bulk food stores. If the applesauce you are using appears to be runny, drain it using a wire strainer. For either recipe, you will also need a medium-size mixing bowl, a thin metal spatula, a large spoon, heart-shaped cookie cutters, a rolling pin, waxed paper, a plastic straw, scissors, and a wire rack. Optional supplies are a ribbon of your choice, a large cutting board, plastic pony beads or decorative glass beads, glitter glue, puff paint, and natural twine.
Begin by choosing which cinnamon dough recipe you’d like to make, and combine all the ingredients for that particular recipe in a medium-size mixing bowl. Mix the ingredients together thoroughly until they form a ball. The dough must be refrigerated for at least a half-hour before handling. You can leave the dough in the refrigerator overnight if you wish.
When the dough is thoroughly chilled, roll it out on a large sheet of waxed paper. You can either lay the waxed paper on a countertop or if you’re limited on counter space, you can cover a large cutting board with waxed paper and work at a table. Dust your rolling pin with a layer of cinnamon, and roll the dough out to an approximate thickness of 1/4 of an inch. Sprinkle additional cinnamon on the dough if it’s too sticky.
Now it’s time to begin cutting out the ornaments. Dip a heart-shaped cookie cutter in cinnamon to prevent it from sticking to the dough, and cut out the shapes. Use a drinking straw to make a hole in the top of each cinnamon dough valentine. Carefully transfer the cutouts to a wire rack using a thin metal spatula. You can either let them dry on the rack for a couple of days, or you can bake them in a 250-degree oven until they become dry. The drier they are, the darker they will become. Carefully flip the cinnamon hearts during the drying process to prevent the edges from curling.
When the cinnamon hearts have fully dried, you can begin decorating them. One way to decorate them is with glitter glue or puff paint. You can personalize the cinnamon hearts by adding the name of someone special or express yourself with a Valentine’s Day message. Be creative and decorate the edges with scallops or other fancy designs. Allow the cinnamon hearts to dry completely before continuing.
Tie on the ribbon of your choice so the cinnamon valentine hearts may be hung on a hook or attached to a Valentine’s Day gift. Give them to friends and family on Valentine’s Day instead of the usual cards. Recipients are sure to love the delicious aroma, and they’ll appreciate the extra time, effort, and love spent on their Valentine’s Day gift.
You could also string ribbon or natural twine through the holes to make beautiful aromatic Valentine’s Day garland. Between each heart, you could thread and tie off a plastic pony bead or decorative glass bead of your choice. Just make sure the beads are centered between the hearts and secure each one with a knot.
Hang the garland above a doorway or on the railing of a staircase. Guests to your home will be greeted with the unmistakable aroma of cinnamon, and you’ll love the decorative look of these unique Valentine’s Day cinnamon hearts.Hang the garland
