How to make an origami folder

This traditional origami model is a simple project for anyone. The project presented below is folded from an 8 ½” X 11” piece of copy paper, which renders a folder that is approximately 3 ½” X 3”. After you have mastered the model, you can vary the paper dimensions as desired in order to create a larger or smaller folder.

Fold against a hard, flat surface in order to achieve the sharpest creases and most accurate folds possible. Run a pencil or ruler edge over each crease as you work to make each one even sharper.

  1. Position a rectangular piece of paper on your work surface so that the short edges are facing to the left and right. If you are using two-sided paper, make sure that the color you want for the folder’s exterior is facing down.
  2. Bring the left edge over to meet the right edge. Crease and unfold.
  3. Bring the left edge over to meet the vertical center crease line. Crease and unfold.
  4. Bring the right edge over to meet the vertical center crease line. Crease and unfold.
  5. Bring the upper left point of the model down to meet the crease line created in Step 3. The left quarter of the top edge should come down to lie along the same crease line. Crease and leave folded.
  6. Bring the lower-left point of the model up to meet the crease line created in Step 3. The left quarter of the bottom edge should come down to lie along the same crease line. Crease and leave folded.
  7. Bring the upper right point of the model down to meet the crease line created in Step 4. The right quarter of the top edge should come down to lie along the same crease line. Crease and leave folded.
  8. Bring the lower right point of the model down to meet the crease line created in Step 4. The right quarter of the bottom edge should come down to lie along the same crease line. Crease and leave folded.
  9. Bring the left edge of the model over to meet the vertical center crease line. Crease and leave folded.
  10. Bring the right edge of the model over to meet the vertical center crease line. Crease and leave folded. There should now be two triangular shapes, one at the top of the model and one at the bottom. Turn the model over.
  11. Bring the top edge of the model down toward the bottom edge until the triangular shape created in Step 10 is entirely visible. Crease and leave folded to create a rectangular flap.
  12. Bring the bottom edge of the model up toward the top edge until it hits a point midway between the top and bottom of the flap created in Step 11. Crease and unfold.
  13. Bring the bottom edge up toward the top of the model once again. This time tuck the bottom edge into the folds of the rectangular flap created in Step 11. Press flat.
  14. Bring the left edge of the model over to meet the right edge. Crease and leave folded. This creates a rectangular folder with two exterior pockets and one large (or four small) interior pockets.
