What is origami?

Origami is the ancient Japanese art of paper folding. The word origami comes from the Japanese words oru (to fold) and kami (paper).

Traditionally, origami was used to make ornamental items such as vases and flower bouquets. However, in recent years, origami has become increasingly popular as a decorative bookmark.

To make an origami bookmark, you will need a square piece of paper. If you do not have a square piece of paper, you can fold a rectangular piece of paper in half to make a square.

  • Begin by folding your paper in half to create a crease down the middle.
  • Next, fold the top corner down to meet the crease in the middle.
  • Repeat this step with the bottom corner.
  • Now, fold the top corner down again so that it meets the bottom corner.
  • Make one more fold so that all four corners are meeting in the middle.
  • Fold it in half once more and your origami bookmark is complete!

The history of origami

The word origami comes from the Japanese words “ori” meaning “folding”, and “kami” meaning “paper”. Although the first recorded origami instructions date back to the 1700s, historians believe the art of origami may have originated even earlier, in China.

The earliest known reference to origami in Japan is from a book called Hyakunin Isshu, which was written in the 13th century. This book contains a poem about a person who folds paper into the shape of a crane. In addition to this poem, there are many other references to origami in Japanese literature throughout the centuries.

During the Edo period (1603-1867), origami became very popular among the Japanese people. At this time, the paper was quite expensive, so only wealthy people could afford to fold origami models. However, by the end of the Edo period, papermaking technology had improved and paper became more affordable. This allowed everyone to enjoy origami regardless of their social class.

In recent years, origami has gained popularity all over the world. Today, there are thousands of different origami models that can be created using simple folding techniques. Some people use origami to create beautiful works of art, while others use it as a way to relax and unwind. No matter how you choose to enjoy it, origami is a fun and rewarding hobby for people of all ages!

The benefits of origami

Origami is a traditional Japanese art form that involves folding paper into a variety of shapes and figures. It is said to have originated in the 17th century, and it has been practiced ever since.

There are many benefits to origami, including the following:

It can help improve your concentration and focus.

It can help reduce stress and anxiety levels.

It can be used as a form of mindfulness meditation.

It can help improve your problem-solving skills.

It can be used to create beautiful works of art.

The basics of origami

Origami is the traditional Japanese art of paper folding. The word origami comes from two Japanese words – oru (to fold) and kami (paper).

Although origami is often associated with paper cranes, it can be used to create a wide variety of objects, including animals, flowers, boxes, airplanes, and even neckties!

Origami does not require any special equipment – all you need is a square sheet of paper. However, it is important to use the correct type of paper. Origami paper is usually a square sheet of thin, colored paper. It can be bought from craft stores or online retailers. If you cannot find origami paper, you can also use regular printer paper; just cut it into a square shape.

Once you have your square sheet of paper, you are ready to start folding!

How to make an origami bookmark

Origami is the art of paper folding, and it’s a great way to make your own bookmarks! This origami bookmark tutorial will show you how to make a simple origami bookmark that you can use over and over again.

You will need:

  • 1 sheet of square origami paper (you can also use regular paper, but it won’t be as easy to fold)
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue (optional)

Start with your origami paper square positioned so that it looks like a diamond. Fold the top corner down to meet the bottom corner. Unfold.

Fold the left and right sides in to meet at the center crease. Unfold.

Repeat Step 1, this time folding the paper all the way in half so that the top corner meets the bottom corner exactly. Crease well and unfold. This time when you open up your paper, you should see 8 small triangles poking up from the center crease (4 on each side).

Take the top layer of the triangle on the left side and fold it down to meet the bottom point of the triangle below it. Crease well and unfold. Repeat with the remaining triangles on this side. When finished, your origami paper should look like a kite.

Turn your origami kite over so that the unfolded side is facing up. Take the top layer of the triangle on the right side and fold it down to meet the bottom point of the triangle below it, creasing well as you go along. Unfold and repeat with the remaining triangles on this side until all of them have been folded in half lengthwise.

Now we’re going to start folding our bookmark into shape! Take one corner of your bookmark (it doesn’t matter which one) and fold it up towards the center crease, aligning
Tips for making origami bookmark

Here are some tips for making origami bookmarks:

Use a square piece of paper. If you don’t have a square piece of paper, you can use a rectangular piece of paper and fold it in half to make a square.

Make sure the paper is not too thick or too thin. Origami paper works well, but you can also use regular printer paper.

Fold the paper in half to make a crease. Unfold the paper and then fold it in half the other way to make another crease. You should now have four equal squares.

Fold the top left corner down to the bottom right corner and crease well. Unfold the paper and then repeat with the top right corner down to the bottom left corner.

Fold the paper in half so that the two creases you just made line up with each other. Crease well and then unfold. You should now have four equal triangles.

Take the top triangle and fold it down so that its point lines up with the bottom edge of the triangle below it. Crease well and then repeat with the other three triangles.

Now, take the top flap and fold it over to the right so that its edge lines up with the crease in the middle of the triangle below it. Crease well and then repeat with the other three flaps.

Finally, fold up the bottom point of each triangle so that its edge lines up with the crease in the middle of the triangle above it. Your origami bookmark is now complete!

Variations of origami bookmark

Origami bookmark variations abound, but most follow a similar pattern: a strip of paper is folded in half, then in half again, with the resulting triangle fold forming the basis for the design. From there, the strip is usually embellished with additional folds and/or cuts to create a design that can be slipped over the page of a book. Some origami bookmark designs are very simple, while others can be quite elaborate.

How to use an origami bookmark

To use an origami bookmark, first, fold a piece of paper in half lengthwise. Then fold the paper in half again widthwise. Next, fold the paper in half once more lengthwise. Once the paper is folded into thirds, cut along the centerfold line. Unfold the paper and you should have a rectangle with two clean folds running down the center.

Fold the top corner of the paper down to meet the bottom edge, aligning the fold with the centerline. Then fold the triangle that you’ve just created in half, bringing the top corner down to meet the bottom edge again. Repeat this step until you have a long, skinny triangle.

To finish folding your origami bookmark, simply bring both ends of the triangle together and tuck one end into the other. Your bookmark is now complete!
