How to make an easter bunny costume

Whether you view the Easter bunny as Peter Cottontail, Bugs Bunny, or even as one of those cuddly critters from the infamous Cadbury TV commercials, you can make a quick and easy costume that will have you hopping during the holiday.

Buying a rabbit suit at a local shop can be an easy solution to your costume quandary, but you will find making it from scratch to be much more rewarding. It might seem like becoming bedecked in all-out bunny gear a daunting task, yet it is certainly not impossible.

This is also a very cheap costume to make, so you may want to give it a try before forking out the big bucks for a rental fee. All you need for your costume are a few basic clothing and household items and two or three hours of your time. Best of all there is no sewing involved, so you don’t have to be a seamstress by trade.

What you need:

  • White sweat suit
  • Pink felt
  • White pom-pom (or white sock, cotton balls and a pin)
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors

First, you need to cut an oval shape out of the pink felt that covers most of the front of the white sweatshirt. Then hot glue the oval to the front of the sweatshirt. When you have finished, be sure to drape the sweatshirt over a flat surface and let it dry for a few hours.

Take the white pom-pom and glue it to the back of the sweatpants. You can also make a puffball tail by rolling up a white sock into a ball and gluing the pieces of cotton all over it. Then pin it to the back of the sweatpants. You can also use black or gray sweatsuits. White tends to get pretty dirty after a day of festivities, so you might want to pick one of the alternate colors.

What you need:

  • White sneakers
  • Gloves (or a pair of white socks)
  • Pink felt
  • Glue gun
  • Scissors

First, you need to cut out pieces of pink felt to resemble the pads on a bunny’s paws. The pieces should be sized to fit on the palm side of the gloves. When you have finished, hot glue the felt pieces to each glove. You can also use a pair of white socks in the same fashion.

The white sneakers will serve as the back paws for the costume.

What you need:

  • 2 Paper plates
  • Pink construction paper
  • Black and pink crayons or markers
  • White glue
  • Stapler
  • Paper hole punch
  • Thin rubber band
  • Scissors

Take one of the paper plates and cut it in half. To make the ears for your bunny costume, cut half-moon shapes from the pink paper and trim the pieces so they are smaller than half of a paper plate. Then glue each half moon in the center of a plate half. When you have finished, take a crayon and draw on a nose and whiskers.

You need to position the ears on the other plate and staple them in place. Cut out the openings for each of the bunny’s eyes and trim around the mouth to form the cheeks. The final step is to punch holes on the sides near the ears and secure a length of elastic so the mask fits snugly around your head. Additionally, you can color the insides of the ears pink, if you wish.

When you have finished making the costume, you might want to give it a test run to make sure you are happy with the result.
