How to make a Flute from PVC Pipe

Do you have an ear for music?

Do you play a musical instrument? I bet you’ve never heard of playing a flute that’s made out of plastic pipe, have you? You can have some fun and make your own flute and easily learn how to play it too! You’ll amaze your family and friends with your unique musical instrument!

You’ll need to start this project with a piece of white, plastic PVC pipe. If you’re not sure what it looks like, then take a look at the cold water supply lines in your house. They will be either copper or plastic PVC pipe, but they’ll probably be the latter.

Once it’s turned into a flute, the cold pipe will be safe to place your lips on. So, don’t worry about that. However, you should wear a dust mask over your face when you’re cutting, drilling, and filing the plastic. This will keep the dust out of your lungs. You should also wear a pair of safety glasses to protect your eyes.

That said, the piece you need will measure three quarters of an inch in diameter. It will also need to be fifteen and nine sixteenths inches long. You can trim any excess off the length with a hacksaw blade. Use a fine file to smooth down any rough edges along either end.

Then, you’ll need to use a ruler to make a straight line from one end of the PVC pipe body to the other. Use a crayon or another removable writing substance to mark the line.

Now comes the planning part: you’ll need to use a crayon and a ruler to mark the locations of the holes on the pipe. It might be easier for you to draw a line on a straight line on a piece of paper. Then, you can mark the locations on the paper. Finally, you can place the paper over the body of the PVC pipe and use it as a pattern.

From the end that’s going to be the mouthpiece, measure down six and seven eights inches. This hole will need to be three eights of an inch in size. The second hole will be located eight inches from the end, and it will also need to be three eights of an inch in diameter. The third of the six holes will be nine and an eighth inches from the mouthpiece end. It will need to be the same three eights of an inch in diameter. However, the third hole will need to be raised up twenty five degrees higher than the first two holes.

The last three holes are all different diameters. The fourth hole needs to be located ten and three quarters inches from the end. It will be eleven thirty seconds of an inch in size. The fifth hole will need to be located ten degrees higher than the fourth hole. It will be eleven and a half inches from the mouthpiece end. It will also need to be seven sixteenths of an inch in diameter. And finally, the last hole, the sixth one, will be twelve and three quarters inches from the end. It will also be five sixteenths of an inch in size.
Now you’ll need to place the pipe in a vise and use a drill to bore the holes out. After you’re done, you’ll need to use a fine file to clean out the pieces of plastic from inside. You’ll also need to use a small file or a thin knife blade to clean the debris out of the holes.

Finally, you’ll need to buy a pipe end cap and bore a small round hole into its middle. Then, glue it onto the end of your flute. Once the glue has completely dried, you can try your new pipe flute out.
