Mailboxes come in many different styles, sizes, and colors.
There are mailboxes that are mounted on a house wall, and there is the type that’s mounted on a post along the roadway. Mailboxes used to be only made of aluminum, but they now come in weather-resistant plastic too. However, most mailboxes are dull and are one color.
If you want to spruce up your own mailbox, you can make it decorative and attractive. They don’t have to be boring! The only thing that’s holding you back is your own imagination! Basically, the only requirements that the United States Postal Service, (USPS) has, is in regard to the size, shape, and opening of the box. The USPS does require that mailboxes that are positioned along the roadway have a box or house number, and a street address if the box is not on the same street as your house is. The numbers and letters must also be an inch high, and they must be easy to read too. So, if you have such a box, you’ll need to add some identification into the decoration.
Planning is the key to success in any project, and decorating a mailbox is no exception. First, you will need to decide what type of theme you want to put on your box. The possibilities almost are endless here. You can choose a theme that will add an accent to your house, or you can choose a theme of one of your favorite things. An “accent to your house” could be a small scene on your mailbox that resembles your house. Or, it could be to paint your mailbox the same color as your house. Then, you could put your address on your box, along with something significant about your house, such as a picket fence, et cetera. Your favorite theme can be flowers, animals, birds, et cetera.
Then, to start your project, you will need a metal mailbox. Plastic boxes can be painted, but the paint doesn’t hold up well under adverse weather conditions. Decide what color you want the base to be; white is a good color. Make sure that the paint you choose is suitable for use on a metal mailbox. The mailbox will need to be clean and free from debris before you paint the base color. Spray paint is the easiest to use, but you can also brush on the paint if you desire. Allow the paint to dry according to the manufacturer’s directions.
The next step is to either paint on your chosen theme or design, or, you can purchase pre-made plastic adhesions. The pre-made adhesions come in a variety of colors and designs. And, they install easily on the sides and top of your mailbox. If you’re not much of an artist, you can use stencils to trace a picture or design onto the sides and front of your metal mailbox with a lead pencil. Then, you can use a paint that is suitable for metal to fill in the tracings.
Finally, after you have finished decorating your mailbox, and the paint has dried thoroughly, you will need to seal the paint. Lacquer works best for this application, and you will need to follow the manufacturer’s directions in order to achieve the best results. You should use three or four coats of lacquer to ensure the paint will be protected from adverse weather conditions. Then, to further protect your mailbox, and to keep it looking good, you should apply a light coat of a good – quality liquid car wax on it once or twice a year.
