A lawn that is watered improperly can be expensive. It can destroy grass, gardens, and plants. It can also run up costly water bills. A good irrigation system can avoid this. Irrigation systems can be attractive selling features, and in some cases, increase property value.
Plan ahead before you begin installing an irrigation system. Study your property. Call all of your utility companies before you dig. Check with your water company. Find out what types of systems they can handle and if proper water pressure will be available. Also, determine where your water sources will be.
It is important that every area of your yard gets water. You need to identify things in your yard that could possibly block water. Examples of this would be trees, driveways, and patios. You also need to determine if there is adequate drainage.. Have someone help you measure the entire yard. Make two sketches.
On one sketch include all features, such as your house, driveway, trees, etc. Once these steps are taken, you can choose what components you want in your system. Sprinkler heads will also need to be decided upon. There are a few different types of pipes that can be used for your irrigation system. Polyethylene and PVC can both be used, although polyethylene is recommended.
You also need to determine what fittings will be used. Here are some different types of basic fittings for system construction.
-Straight couplers: These are used to connect two pieces of pipe or extend the length of a pipe that’s too short.
-Poly plugs: These are connected to the end of a pipe to stop water flow.
-Elbow couplers: These are used to create 90 degree angles in the pipe system.
-T-couplers: These are used to connect 3 pipes together at the same location.
You will also need to determine what types of sprinkler heads you will be using. Rotor sprinkler heads rotate. They are good for watering large areas. Impact sprinkler heads are also good for large areas. Pop-up rotor heads are for smaller areas and can be good for areas that have obstacles.
Once you have chosen your sprinkler heads, you will need to decide where on the lawn you want them placed. A good way to help yourself with this is to refer to your yard sketches. Put your ideas for sprinkler placement on them. Generally, larger sprinkler heads should be placed in the middle of your yard.
Use the smaller sprinkler heads for places that have obstacles. They can also be used to line property, streets, and driveways. Once you have put the locations of your sprinkler heads on paper, you can then use it as a blueprint for installation.
Water frequency should be checked after the installation of the system. You are going to need to make sure you are following all codes and restrictions for your area. Electronic valves can be used to control the release of water. You can also use a programmed clock to turn the system on and off at pre-set times. You will need to install a control box. This will allow you to tell the system what days of the week you want your lawn watered.
An irrigation system can be a useful addition to anyone’s property. Once installed, it will help maintain the beauty of your lawn with little effort from you. The time and investment will be well worth it. An irrigation system could increase the value of your property and would be an added bonus for any buyer, should you ever decide to sell your home.
As with any do-it-yourself project, follow all installation and safety instructions provided to you by the manufacturers from start to finish. This is a project from which you will reap the rewards for years to come.
