If you’re interested in making a family crest for you and your relatives to display on jackets or towels you must first draw the design. The very first thing you need to do is decide on a shape for the crest. Most crests are neither round nor square but can be designed like a shield or another unique shape. The crest can be as intricate or simple as you want. It can include a banner underneath with the family name and another on top with the family’s home country.
One design that can be made in various ways is a shield-type shape made into four sections. In one section you can have an emblem representing the flag of your former country. In the opposite section, a flag of the country where your family now resides. In the third and fourth sections, you can design emblems, such as swords or lion’s heads, to represent certain struggles your family has overcome throughout the years. Surrounding the shield can be wheat to represent family farmers, swords to show the wars your family has endured or a banner that winds around the entire design.
After figuring out the initial design section of the crest make sections or additions. For instance, draw a line two-thirds of the way up from the bottom of the crest. Now make three or four sections in the upper portion of the crest. Or instead of making sections simply put several emblems on the crest.
There are different techniques that you can use to make the crest unique. One is implementing certain colors, such as the ones of your country flag. As a matter of fact, you can include the country’s flag in the design of the crest. Place the flag in the center and surround it with other things that have a meaning for your particular family. For instance, if your family first came to America and was successful in the wine industry include a bottle or glass of wine in the design. Or if you’ve gotten into the business of raising horses, include a horse head at the top of the crest design.
Letters, or monograms, are also popular on crests. One letter, such as the first letter in the last name, is best since other family member’s initials are different than your own. A phrase or word, written in the language of your former country is another suggestion for your family crest. The phrase or word should represent something that your family believes in, such as Peace, Love, Freedom.
When designing the family crest it’s important to get the opinions of other family members. Take their suggestions into consideration when designing the crest. Most crests represent the family as it was in days gone by. Struggles, beliefs, love of country or state are often represented. After you’re finished with the design you’ll have to find someone to actually make the crest. Keep in mind that the more intricate the design the harder and more expensive it will be to actually have the crest made.
