Building a backyard sandbox is a great project that will give children unlimited hours of fun.
The first step is to decide where in the yard the sandbox will be placed. Consider placing the sandbox in an area that is shady during your child’s typical playtime. This can make the sandbox an extra inviting area because it will not be as hot as it would be if it were sitting in the direct sun.
Once the location has been picked out, consider the dimensions of the sandbox. Take into account how many children, including your child’s friends, may be playing at the sandbox at any one time. A three square foot sandbox would be adequate for one child and a few friends. A six-foot sandbox would be more than large enough for several children at a time. Also, the shape does not necessarily have to be square. A rectangle would suffice as well.
After the location and dimensions have been determined, it is time to gather the materials. You will need landscaping mesh, wood timbers, four L-shaped braces, screws for the braces, and play sand. All these materials are available at home improvement stores such as Home Depot or Lowes.
Cut the landscape mesh to the dimensions of the sandbox. This will allow moisture to drain through the sand. Lay the mesh down. It is not necessary to secure it down because the border and the sand itself will hold it in place.
When it comes to creating the sandbox’s border, you have a few options. Depending on the dimensions of the box, you may use ready-made outdoor wood edging. Another option, if available in your area, is to purchase railroad ties for the border. Otherwise, have four exterior grade 2 x 2 pieces of lumber cut to the sandbox dimensions. Lay the sides of the sandbox around the landscaping mesh. Secure the corners of the wood sides with L-shaped metal brackets and drill in the proper screws. Now you have the sides of the sandbox and the bottom. It is time to fill it with sand.
It is important to fill the box with play sand. Play sand is less course than harsh building sand and has been washed and screened. Play sand typically comes in fifty pound bags. Consult the bag to see how much area it will cover. Then, calculate your sandbox’s area by multiplying the width, depth, and length. Divide this number by the coverage area given on the bag, and that will give you the number of bags necessary for the box. Depending on the size of the sandbox, a more cost-effective way to fill it may be to buy the play sand in bulk. Determine how many pounds of sand you need by multiplying the number of bags you need by how many pounds each bag is. Bulk play sand would be available from sand and gravel companies. Consult your local phone book for further investigation.
After the sandbox is filled, there is only one last step to complete the project. You must have a cover for the box. This will keep the sand clean and dry while also keeping cats from using the area as their giant litter box. The simplest way to keep the sandbox covered is to use a tarp and weight down the corners with bricks. However, anything that fits the box’s dimensions could be used as a cover- A discarded door, a piece of plywood, or a hinged shutter door could be a creative solution for a sandbox cover. Attach the door to the sandbox edge with hinges, and now you have a cover that you can swing open. Now the sandbox is open for play! After the sandbox
